Manx Breed Recognized

CFA has recognized the Manx breed cat for many years. The oldest stud book on hand, Vol. #19, list Manx as one of the breeds that CFA recognized back in the 1920s. Only the rumpy or the rumpy risers are eligible for competition at CFA shows. All other tail lengths are eligible for the AOV (any other variety) Class but are not shown since the desired look is that of complete taillessness.

Body

Besides taillessness, the Manx cat is also known for its robust and rounded appearance. This breed can actually be drawn with a series of circles. It’s best described as a bowling ball with legs. It has a round head and rounded cheeks which give it a jowly appearance; seen more in the male than in the female. Its legs are longer in the front than in the back, thus causing the rump to be higher than the shoulders. The shortness of back forms a continuous arch from shoulders to rump. The eyes are round but set slightly with a tilt toward the ear. The Manx should have a sweet expression and disposition.

Coat

The two types of Manx coats are short hair and long hair (known as Cymric in TICA). The coat length is the only difference there is in this breed. The short hair Manx has a double coat, the outer guard hairs are somewhat hard, appearance is glossy. A softer coat may occur in whites and dilutes due to color texture gene link. The long hair Manx (Cymric) has a silky texture to its coat. The coat is of medium length, with breeches, abdomen and neck ruff that is longer than the coat on the main body. The silky texture is soft and falls smoothly on the body while being full and plush due to the double coat.

Personality

A true Manx cat is a very affectionate, loving, loyal and semi playful cat. Manx exhibit many dog-like characteristics such as fetching and coming when called. They are known as a one-person cat or family cat. Once they bond with someone, it’s difficult for many Manx to be happy in a different home. Manx readily accept attention from any human source. They’re not overly active. On a scale from one to ten, I’d say they’re a four to five. They can be playful but aren’t the type to be doing something all the time or they’re going to go crazy. Manx are as happy lounging around as they are chasing feather teasers, watching birds or getting into things.

Pricing

Pricing on a registered Manx cat has many factors. Pet, show or breed quality is the first factor. The second factor to consider is tail length. Parentage can also play a role as well as show titles held. Show titles in CFA are categorized by Grand Champion (GC), Grand Premier (GP), Regional Win (RW), Breed Win (BW), National Win (NW) or Distinguished Merit (DM). Age is also another factor in determining price. Retired breeders and show cats can often be found for a third of what a kitten would be purchased for.
